The Canadian Customs Authorities have brought in a measure which requires customs codes to be transcribed on invoices for imported goods. The measure which came into effect on the 1st May 2002 uses 10 figure, HS codes (Brussels classification) on both paper documentation and electronic data for imports with a value equivalent to or over 1.600 Canadian Dollars (about 1.120 Euros). The onus is on the importer and not the overseas supplier to conform to the new regulation. Failure to apply this measure will lead to delay in releasing the goods from customs and in the case of mistakes concerning the classification, importers may be fined.
